making-sweetness happy new year! (pull your ear)
Saturday, January 3, 2009 making-sweetness Back to the top

lame saying i've heard since young...and repeated around this time every year without fail. oooo...it rhymes too!

hahaha....anyways...I'M BACK. but not for long....going to malaysia tomorrow to visit relatives and stuff. cool. 3 places in a week...hahah.

bio is bad for my state of mind and mental health. when i overheard it, the first thing i thought of was multistage blah blah, mutation of 3 tsg and 1 pog, etc. (if i remembered correctly...) there's nothing much to be done now other than pray. haiz.

hk was FUN! and very fattening too-i still haven't lost my 05 blubber and i bet i've gained more weight. haiz. shall divide this post abt hk into 4 sections--trivialities, eats, buys and sights. pix should come later coz my usual com (ie the one with msn, linked to the printer and has the cam software downloaded into it) is officially on strike. it just keeps hanging, to the utmost dismay of every com user in the family.

overall, the hk tourism board catchphrase can pretty much sum up what i did-eat and shop. ok....i did go walk walk walking about, watch tv (hk dramas!), do my adult ic, read (like about 8 books in 2 weeks), meet up with relatives and my parents' friends...BUT I DIDN'T GET TO GO TO OCEAN PARK! =( awww....too bad. shall try again when i go back for that mandatory once-every-3-years visit to keep my 3 stars on the ic.

trivialities--random observations jane makes
1. the air in hk is really awful in contrast to that in s'pore. period. the sky is always so grey and one sees the buildings on the other side of victoria harbour as if shrouded in a mist. that was the first thing i noticed coz there see med to be a brown smog thingy over the whole area which was especially apparent when the plane was landing. prob pollution from the industrial areas in china (as everyone says...hahha)

2. the weather RUINED my HAIR and already pretty awful SKIN. it's much drier there than in s'pore, so my hair and skin kinda dried up even though i slathered on moisturisers as if my life depended on it. hahahha....blowing dry my hair was a big mistake too, but i was cold mah.

3. facebook addicts are scary. i didn't use the com as oft as i would like to (free internet at the shopping centre!) coz of this FREAKY guy who would peer over your shoulders as you check your mail, etc so that he can pounce on you and use the com once you 'appear' to be done with your stuff. very annoying to have a stranger staring at your mail can. good grief. and who gets this addicted to facebook anyway?

4. I GREW FAT AGAIN! over there, i don't eat till i'm full. i eat till i'm bursting at the seams, on the verge of puking out that last dimsum/vegetable/mouthful of rice, etc. hahhahaha....a little exaggeration there.

5. no one likes poor bush. saw the clip of the guy throwing the shoes at him on the train and everyone in the carriage was either laughing or saying 'dai sei' (ie 'serves him right.')

6. jj isn't very successful with his attempt to enter the hk market. but the good news is that his duet with ah sa is quite a popular ringtone! heard 'xiao jiu wo' a couple of times in random places....hahahahhahahha

7. hk people are more vocal than s'poreans, like they would talk to random strangers they are sharing the table with if they wanna add to the convo that random person is having with his/her friends.

8. they play the chinese national anthem before news time on tv every single day, for obvious reasons. man....after hearing it for 3 weeks, i can memorise the lyrics and sing the song lor! i can also sing the jingle soler sang for the 'zhui hung yun' advert, as well as the theme song for the cooking show 'so far so good' (very entertaining watching ah so cook! hahahha) keep hearing these songs over and over again, plus they are really catchy too!

9. fish don't die immediately even after you degut them. they can still wriggle around in the plastic bag like 15 min after you remove its innards. hahahah.....how fun! nice to see them swimming around in the market too, flapping around, taking what could be their last breath. SADISTIC....

eats--the reason for my growing waistline =(
now i realise why i get so fat whenever i go to hk--i keep having to finish up the large amount of food on the table. my nice po po (grandma who seems to have made up her mind about me being a da xiao jie who doesn't do anything, much to my indignation) cooks at least 4 large dishes (including soup) and occasionally buys roast duck/roast meat, etc to 'ga song' (literally add dishes)

after eating so much for dinner and drinking 2 bowls of soup almost every day, HOW CAN I NOT GROW FAT???? not to mention the occasional 'chee chiong fun' for breakfast, 'yum cha' and eat dimsums for lunch a few times a week and trying food that's been recommended by that chua lam guy. terrible.

oh....back to the food. JANE LIKES TO GO AND YUM CHA! mostly, it's just my family and popo, but once we went with relatives (this gu po and a suk ye. i must rmb to go tweak the lang thingy on this com one day.) 'ming sing' is still the best in the area, LOVE THEIR ROASTED YOUNG PIGEONS AND YAM CAKES! hahahha....and it's cheap too! less than hk$200 for 5 people and you can eat till you wanna puke. that's about s$8 per person, the average price if you were to eat at the roadside stalls or cha chan tang (the hk-style teahouse thingy) anyway.

oooo....love the roadside food too! hahahhahaha....my fave is the 'gai dan zhai', literally translated as little egg. hahahhaha....it's kinda like a waffle batter thing and hard to describe the shape. they sell it everywhere anyway...so keep a lookout for them! ate stinky tofu and curry fishballs too.

DESSERTS! went to eat 'done lai' and 'done dan' (milk and egg respectively that's somehow cooked till it solidifies) at some famous place with a looooooong queue! lotsa random tourists holding their guidebooks queueing up there. hheheheheheh. had 'yung ji gum lo' and my fav sesame paste at other dessert shops too!

oh....and i can't forget those other 'recommended by chua lam' shops. that guy is a s'porean who's currently based in hk now and has his own food programme bringing guests to eat at good places around hk. anyways, there's this wanton noodle stall and fishball noodle stall there's pretty good at the market my popo frequents. when i got to hk island (i stayed with my popo in the new territories mah. so must cross the sea to get to hk island where central, causeway bay, etc are), we went to try some beef noodles there (not too bad) and the always-featured-on-tv milk tea (that was good. this means something coz i HATE milk tea). ate pretty good claypot rice that day too! hahahahhaha...

buys--jane stares more than buys coz it's wintertime
MUST SHARE MY BEST BUY FIRST! ooooo....jane is excited liao. hahahahha....it's a big, white GENUINE adidas bag for about s$30!!!!!!!! you don't find real adidas bags that can fit 2 big shoe boxes (and still have some leftover space)in s'pore going for that price. anyways, i bought it at an adidas factory outlet sale in this big building specialising in the distribution of fashion wear right outside the 'lai chee kok' mtr station. my mum bought a lot of t-shirts there too!

grandville road (near tsim tsa tsui) is also a good place for nice clothes! bought a skirt, a very cool looking top, 3/4 pants and stuff there. the mongkok and tsim tsa tsui areas have nice stuff if you know where to go! also bought jeans and a watch around there. oooooooo...was so tempted to buy a fedora--there were soooooooooooo many nice ones there, but my mum would probably ask me why would i buy it (and i'll be forced to answer 'coz it's cool and jj keeps wearing it.' hahahhahahaha....wonder what she'll say to that.)

bought kawaii-ish pouches around temple street! they sell alot of fake bags and stuff there. oh yes.....and 'adult toys' too, really openly somemore....disgusting.

sights--aka walking and taking pics session
went to lamma island with my dad and sis coz my mum didn't wanna walk. left early in the morning to go to the harbour and take a boat there, but we kinda missed it so we went to eat macs first. hahahahha. did you know that chow yun fatt lives there? well...now you do! (lotsa angmohs like that place too and no, we didn't see his house.) followed a rudimentary map from one harbour to the other, traversing across a large part of the island. it goes up up up and then down.....providing for the quintessentially hongkonger past-time 'hang san'-ing. ya....we literally walked round roads in the mountains. lol. ate some tau huey there too, supposedly made by an ah po and really silky smooth.

another place we went walking around is hk island. went to look see look see after taking the bus there.....oh and to eat as well. hahahahahahha. it's expensive to cross the sea lor, so must make the most out of it. anyways, the roads there are like super narrow! major dif compared to that across the sea in kowloon and nt. must be coz of the lack of space on that puny island. ohhhhh....there's this cool road called 'ladder street' or something which is literally made of just steps! hahahhaha....apt name. anyways, we walked around hollywood road, gawked at the random antiques they sell there, walk around narrow streets lined with touristy goods, etc. hahahha...good way to burn off the fats (as compared to lazing around on the couch watching tv)

ohohoh! we also saw the christmas lights on that day! around the avenue of stars in tsim tsa tsui....where they have the handprints of famous actors on the ground. erm.....they prob come from a dif era coz i don't really recognise the most of the people whose handprints are there lor! hahahaahahha. except like tony leung, wong kar wai, jackie chan, etc....hahhahahahhaa. walked around there looking at the christmas lights on the buildings and across the harbour. eeeeee....my hands kept shaking during the long exposure used in the night mode so the pics are kinda blurry.

and another place we went to is yuen long on a long long bus ride up and down the mountains, past many villages. didn't do much there other than buy lao po bing and goodies from the famous shops there. hahahhahahah

erm.....since it is considered a tourist attraction, i might as well say that the village popo lives in is a 'sight' too. there's this wishing tree there that you could throw stuff with your wish written on the stuff--until a main branch gave way and broke one fine day during cny a few years back. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHA. ironic. the toilet is really famous too coz it's really nice (cost a pretty penny to build too), won some 'best toilet' award and it's free! haahahhahah....not bad for a public toilet....LOL. went down to the river nearby to go walk walk....there's nice fish swimming in there and fields of flowers for cny. nice idyllic place!

hahahahaha........long long post. it's a bad habit man.....my posts seem to get longer and longer with each successive post. lol. then again, it's hard to compress 3 weeks into 1 post. it's in the middle of the night again now. hahahhhahaha. haiz. too bad for my panda eyes.
